OPPORTUNITY. Commissioned
by Level 3 Communications to serve as its northeastern regional
data center, 128 First Avenue in Needham, Massachusetts, features
a physically enhanced shell with an extremely heavy duty roof,
a backup cooling system that includes a 400,000 gallon water tank,
16 megawatts of backup power generation, and robust HVAC, security,
fire protection and fiber distribution systems.
As
a result of overcapacity among telecommunications network providers,
Level 3 was eager to divest of all non-revenue producing assets,
and the building was put on the market at the end of 2002. But
coming on the heels of the tech and telecom market crashes and
a more general
business retrenchment, there were few interested parties for a
vacant data center building.
